Build a Moving Calendar After Your Home Closing Date Is Set

Coordinate movers, utilities, access, deliveries, and address changes around confirmed dates—with room for a transaction schedule to shift.

Separate fixed dates from dates that can move

Once your closing team provides a target date, build a calendar with the source for each commitment. Mark the closing appointment, access or key handoff as confirmed only when the responsible person confirms it. Keep moving reservations, utility start dates, delivery windows, building approvals, and time away from work in separate rows. If a transaction date is still conditional, label it as tentative before making a nonrefundable commitment.

Ask your attorney and agent how to handle a closing-date change and who will tell you when the date is final. If it moves, contact each company or provider rather than assuming the update will reach them automatically. Save written confirmations next to the calendar entry.

Work backward from move day

Request written estimates from movers and give them accurate details about both addresses, stairs, elevators, loading, large items, and timing. For a condo, confirm the building's current move procedure, reservation, insurance paperwork, and delivery rules before the mover's deadline. For a town or street with parking or access requirements, verify the current process with the relevant local source.

Ask utility providers when service can begin and what information they need. Arrange internet or other installation only after confirming access and availability. Keep an essentials box for the first night and a separate secure folder for closing papers, keys, insurance information, and service contacts. Do not pack documents or items you may need during the transaction.

Make a low-stress sequence

Use a simple timeline:

  • After the date is confirmed: finalize mover and building arrangements; ask about cancellation or rescheduling terms.
  • Before move week: confirm utility appointments, deliveries, access instructions, and the handoff plan.
  • The day before: reconfirm arrival windows and make sure the people involved have the correct contact number.
  • Move day: keep keys, closing contacts, medications, chargers, and essential documents with you.
  • After arrival: record utility account details, note any condition questions, and update your secure home records.

Build a small buffer where you can. A mover's arrival time, utility visit, or delivery window may not align perfectly with access. Keep a backup contact and know what you can postpone without affecting safety or essential services.

Update the calendar when information changes

Write down who confirmed each date, when they confirmed it, and any reference number. This makes it easier to ask the right provider for an update. A calendar is a coordination tool; transaction deadlines and contract obligations should come from your attorney and closing team.
